As far as I know, the stereotype is unjustified, at least among adult men and women. My friends and I talk openly about sexual things all the time, and almost everyone admits to masturbation. However, most of the women I've talked to about it did not start masturbating until around age 15 or later, while most of the guys masturbated many years before that (around age five or six). I know that I never tried it until I was 15. So if you're talking to a group of 14-year old people, it could be very true that most of the girls don't masturbate yet.

Why does this happen? What accounts for this? Why do girls start later?

I would guess that the reason many guys try masturbation so early and girls try it relatively late is probably because young boys get erections, and they learn quickly that it feels good to rub or stroke the penis when it's hard. However, young girls don't see such an obvious change like this in their bodies that they can 'experiment' with. Young girls and boys probably have the same amount of erotic feelings, dreams, etc, but it seems that learning masturbation is just easier for males.

To my knowledge masturbating is not against catholics religion. I'm Catholic Anyway as for the "cuz guys are more horny" comment Yeah they are up to an extent but most girls just don't want to admit they do it but it doesn't mean they haven't tried in thier free time and also since girls usually start puberty first you'd think they'd be more like that first. I didn't masturbate until I started puberty in 7th grade because I didn't feel the urge to until then. But also before 7th grade to be honest I didn't really know much sexual stuff at that time P.S. Can't admins block REW? There is a no spamming code that keeps people from using those symbols.

Pardon my language, but that's bullshit. It depends on the person, not the gender. For example, I have a stronger sex drive than my boyfriend. And a friend (female) of mine also has a very strong sex drive, stronger than her ex-boyfriend's. It's just that for some reason a lot of girls are shy about admitting it. I'm not one of those girls though =P

Females are all very different in their sex drives and expressions. Some women may need regularly to masturbate 4-6 times a day throughout their lives, while others never experience any noticeable sex drive. However, most women I have known would express a strong, recurring need for sexual release (alone or with a partner). It is extremely common for teenage girls to masturbate.
In fact, some females entering puberty experience the stereotypically "male"pattern of strong sex drive, including daily masturbation with explicit fantasies, orgasms during sleep, and enjoyment of visual stimuli (e.g., photos of well-endowed men, scenes of intercourse, etc.). This was my experience. At age 12 I suddenly had to cope with a new appetite arising from my genitals, and an overwhelming urge to mentally undress almost everyone I met. This was an enjoyable new phase of life overall, but it would have been much healthier to have been prepared for it with a loving conversation and the gift of a dildo (so I wouldn't have to rely on carrots, grubby golf club handles, etc.). Until I reached adulthood, my sexuality was an embarrassing but very pleasant thing I could discuss with nobody.
