i figured it was kinda sad that there were no recovery stories so here we go:
earlier this school year i would have panic attacks quite frequently where i'd get sick and hyperventilate to the point of not being able to walk or talk or anything..
then i talked to my psychologist about it and she told me to practice my breathing while i wasnt having an attack.
this is how i'm supposed to do it:
work on breathing through your NOSE. inhale slow and deep for 5 seconds, then hold it for 5 exhale for five seconds. do this over and over. that way, if you are hyperventilating or feel like you are going to, you will be prepared and practiced and nobody will even notice. its hard to do while you are hyperventilating but you need to practice it while you are not having one it helps so much!
also, you need to know your signs. whether its a sudden sick feeling, a nagging worry, thumping heart, fast breathing, dizziness or anything else know what yours are so youre prepared when an attack is coming.
if you notice any of these signs start that breathing and distract yourself! whatever is causing the the panic, you need to stop thinking about. concentrate on a poster or something or tell your friends to amuse you by singing a random song... anything to keep yourself distracted!
remember.. know your signs, practice your breathing, and keep yourself distracted from whatever you are worrying about!
i have not had a major panic attack for a few months already.. i dont think i've hyperventilated since around october and now i just have little ones occasionally. for me that is a huge success!!
