This has become a problem at my school. It is a brand new rule that states if you are late that means you get a detention. It came into effect on Friday.
So it was the end of first period and I had decided that I wanted to stay after to help my teacher clean up her room since the class had left it a mess. I finished and I was going to get a pass, but the teacher was too busy since she had her other class coming in so I thought that I would be safe. I then went to the bathroom, since the school tells us to go before class, and I still had time left. I was at the bottom of the stairs when the bell rang, less than thirty seconds away, so then I had to go to the office since the teachers are made to lock the doors. The assistant principal asks why I was late, I told her I was busy helping a teacher clean her room and I went to the bathroom, but she did not care. A detention was made for Tuesday (today) and that I have to serve for a half an hour. My mind says no, that I am not going to serve something I do not believe in. All my friends and family supports my choice but I am still unsure. I felt that at first I was doing the right thing, but then I started to get a change of heart.
Yesterday (Monday) it was the end of the first half of Biology. Everyone went out to stretch their legs, and came back before the bell. Only one did not. He came back five minutes after the bell rang without a reason for being late. The Teacher sent him to the office. So he goes down and gets a pass but it is fro Guidance office saying he was allowed in class and that he did not have a detention. The teacher said that it was unfair, so she goes and calls the office and explains what happens. He is sent back down to the office to get a detention, but he gets his pass stamped and is allowed back in class without a detention. The teacher still thought it was unfair and calls the office once more. They told her that they would handle it later or something like that. End of class came she got a call and only told him no, so, so far from what I can gather he does not have a detention which heightened my reason not to go to the detention. If i do not go, i get two detentions, if i skip those i get Saturday Morning Detention, if I skip that then I get two SMDs, and if I skip that I get a suspension. Is it really worth it? Any of it?
