Wow, I just done my Maths exam today in school and I left out life 14 questions (about 5 pages) all of which included algebra. I really wanted to get a better mark than last year and I don't understand algebra!
I need help! x

A Simple Equation
x + 14 = 30
A easy way to find out is the answer minus the number. Example 30-14=16 , so 16+14=30, so X would equal 16.
It would be x+14=30 Answer: X=16
More Complex
x + 23 = 45 x + 23 - 23 = 45 - 23 (Subtract 23 from both sides) x = 22
Think of a line down the middle where the equal signs are. What you do to one side of the equation you have to do to the other side to keep it balanced.
The question is x + 23 = 45 So you Subtract 23 from both sides as shown ^.
x+23-23= 0 so that cancels itself out. Now 45-23=22 so x=22
Answer - 22+23 = 45 OR x=22
If you have harder questions then these, please give an example. I don't know what grade you are in or how far into the course you are in. I'm not good at explaining math sometimes but I hope this can help.

Always remember what you do to the left side you HAVE TO!!! do to the right.

I know how to do the equations above I just can't do these ones...
Examples from my Maths Textbook.
5x=3x+8 9x=6x+21 2x=x+9
stuff like that..

5x=3x+8 9x=6x+21 2x=x+9
Now, rules of algebra state that if you want to do something to one side of an equasion you have to do the same thing to another side of the equasion, to keep it equal. Take the statement:
5=5
Now, this statement is true. If we add two to both sides of the equasion we get
7=7 which is also true.
The same works for division, multiplication, anything. so in situations like 5x=3x+8 9x=6x+21 2x=x+9
just remove the x from the right hand side of the equasion\
for the first 5x=3x+8 therefore you can subtract 3x from both sides without altering the answer so you get 2x=8 and since 2x is 8, devide both sides by 2 to get x=4 now if you put four back into the orgional equasion you get 5*4 = 3*4 + 8 which becomes 20 = 12 + 8 therefore 20 = 20 so you have proven that x = 4
Just do the same with the rest of your equasions, trying to get a single value for x

I'll do the same question as Mikeys but I don't understand his way 5x=3x+8 Firstly, you need to collect all the x's on one side, so it is easier to work with. To do this, subtract 3x from both sides.So:5x = 3x + 8 5x - 3x = 3x + 8 - 3x (This is subtracting 3x from both sides)2x = 8 (This is simplifying it)2x / 2 = 8 / 2 (Divide both sides by the same number to get x on its own)x = 4 Ta Da Hope that helped!

2x=x+9
x is the same as 1x
so like the other one, we have to get the letters to one side.
so it would be 2x-x=9
so x=9
thats your answer..
9x=6x+21
9x-6x=21
3x=21
3x/3=21/3
x=7

It's very proffesional and teacher like. Do you want to be a maths teacher when you're older?
