I know that this guy did something horrible and inexcusable, but I don't think it would be right to simply throw him in jail. He probably is mentally ill, and he himself was probably sexually abused as a child. Someone who would do something like that obviously has severe problems.
I think if he pleaded insanity, the judge should have sentenced him to stay in an institution, not just "be assessed" (whatever that means). Because either way, he would probably be out of there in a few years -- but if he spent those years in jail, which is full of people abusing each other, he would still eventually become a "free man" and be even more screwed up than he was before. Yet if he spent at least a few years in an institution, there's more of a possibility of turning his life around through therapy and rehabilitation.

Dear Aod:
I'm sorry to hear what happened to your friend. It must be really hard for her, and you as well: hearing all this, but not being able to do anything to help. Well, I think you're already helping her, by listening to her. Talking is a great form of therapy. I suggest that you encourage her to see a counsellor or therapist, because professionals will know how to help your friend more then the average person. They can help her mentally and emotionally.
It is more then unfortunatley that anything like this should ever happen, but it is no one's fault. Try to let it go and love life for what it is.
My heart goes out to your friend and hope she is doing okay.
