I made a terrible mistake. It was truly awful.
I let my hair grow out.
Superficial, isn't it? I know. No one should be able to abuse you about such a superficial trait. It's nothing. It's a simple physical trait, right?
Wrong.
And being depressed, that's normal, right? No one should tease you for being depressed. If anything they should pity you and help you, right?
Wrong.
I get so much crap from my friends. Day in, day out, even the quiet ones call me names, slander, lies. They call me 'emo'. Filthy emo. Emo kid. Stupid emo. Go home and cut yourself, emo. Oh, look, it's an emo. Look, he's throwing an emo fit! Die.
And I'm sick of it. I wish it would stop. I can't stand up to them, because they have too many numbers. I have no one left on my side. To fit in I just have to smile, nod and pretend it doesn't bother me. Then I try and hide the scars on my arms. I'm sick of it. I wish it would end. But if I stand up to them they'll reject me and cast me out. Even the quiet ones. I want to be able to talk to my friends and be normal again. But every time I adress the issue they just assume I'm throwing another 'emo fit' and they won't take me seriously.

This may sound stupid but... cut your hair? you've just said about what a stupid mistake it was and stuff. I don't think you should worry... they sound like immature brats, ignore them and laugh to yourself that they're so stoopid that they have fun in calling others names.

I know exactly what your going through. My friends do the same thing to me. They will call me emo. *stupid emo *go cut yourself emo *go stone yourself to death ya emo *freaking emo *emo girl *filthy emo chick
and crap like that. And it gets to me too sometimes but I do my best to ignore them. I'm afraid to show them the scars on my arms as well because I'm afraid they'll make fun of me even more. I can't say that's it's bothering me because everytime I tell them to shut it they say "What are you going to do? Sit in a corner crying and cutting yourself?"
What might help is if you write your feelings out somewhere. That's what I do and it helps a lot of the time. I have my own journal with me at all times and there's also a journal on here that you can sign up for. You can even put a password on it if you don't want anyone to see it. And with an online journal your friends don't have to know about a guy owning a journal. I know that with my journal that I carry around everywhere people make fun of me for that but I really don't care about it.
I wouldn't advise you to cut your hair if you don't absolutly want to because that's kind of saying that they were right and your just backing down to them. Just because they're making fun of your style does not mean that you should have to change how you look. If your comfertable with long hair and you like how you look then keep it that way. Yeah they'll make fun of you but most people would deal with it because at least they feel comfertable in what they're wearing.
You could also try to make fun of them. I do that and then they shut up for a little while. One of my guy friends loves to call me emo girl but I just respond with preppy boy or Mr. single. He hates them so he'll stop making fun of me for a while.
I hope it all goes well and if you ever need to talk feel free to pm me (private message) anytime. I can relate to how your feeling and I'd be glad to help you. If you need to I'll give you my IM and you can instant message me which is a faster way. Just remember that they only make fun of you because they're bored with their own lame lives.

Just joke around and pretend that you don't have a care in the world for what they are saying. When they see you react the way you do, they feel satisfaction from it and like the attention they get. However, if you pretend to totally not care, they won't get anything out of it and eventually, they'll give up because it wastes their time if they are not going to get a reaction.- I was teased and that is how I was able to put down the teasing about me.
If you pretend to be confident, then in time, you will be confident. And, I'm sure if you really look, there will be some people that won't judge you on your looks. I don't think you should cut your hair just because the other kids are teasing you. You should only do it if you want to do it.

Dear Will:
To cut or not to cut your hair, that is your choice. What would you like to do?

Hope things go better for you.

Allow me to answer that one. He dosent say, look at me, I'm EMO!!! He seems quite happy at times, and can often start more jokes then he forms the brunt of. However, it seems no matter how hard he tries, people still look at him like an emo. Mabye because it is some sort of running joke, they will say, hey look, hes wearing a black jumper today! Emo! If you understand what I mean.

Well, Mikey, the guise is over. I guess we can admit that we know each other in real life. (And maybe others picked up on it in other posts?) I don't want to be better than anyone. I just want to settle for being equal among everyone. Unfortunately no one will see it my way. And whenever I get even close to trying to talk with someone about it... See, I've realised something. People are okay. Really, they are. But separately. If you can get a single person and talk to them, everything will be fine. But add others to the equation... It quickly degenerates. Some groups of friends have a kind of hierarchy (look around next time, you might see). Someone is firmly in charge. When that person is around, you get this thing where if that person has a little go at someone, maybe a little teasing, everyone will take it to heart and multiply it until it's unbearable because they're doing the leader's 'bidding'. Essentially, in my group at school there's this guy who's firmly in charge. And he knows it. So one day he thought it would be funny to call me 'emo'. Suddenly everyone was calling me emo because this one guy started it. I can't talk to him about it because if he relents he effectively loses face in front of everyone else. And these are really, really cool people who I have so much in common with. I'm so disappointed that it had to come to this though. See, I know how people in large groups act, and I know how to influence them somewhat. So does he. The thing is, physically he's stronger than me, and mentally he's smarter than me (in an academic setting). So he takes charge. And I have no idea what to do. He has so much power. People take him so seriously. If I fall out of his favour, others will also scorn me. so I have to put up with being called 'emo' because if I take a stand, he could see that as a challenge or threat to his superiority. In any sort of contest, he would beat me hands down, and I would be outcast (because people are inclined to dislike me anyway).

And by the way, I really, really want to be wrong. I want there to be an innocent explanation, I want to be wrong.

Please dont double post Yeah, there is a clear feeding chain. It really sucks, because people feel so compelled to try to join in anywhere but the bottom. Its like the cultural chain Australia has. For a long time, the Aborigionals were at the bottom of the ladder. So when the Asian workers came in, and slotted in under the Aborigionals, who finally had someone below them, and so on.

Dear Will:
Maybe the problem isn't you. The problem is getting people to see it "your way".
Great explanation by the way. Very clear and easy to understand. Very impressive.
