I think its where someone says that they will not loose their virginity before marriage (the 'clean' thing to do according to many religions)

A virginity pledge is a promise someone makes to not have sex until marriage. Sometimes these are sponsored by schools (private religious schools, not public ones) or churches, so that the young people making the pledge can have support from others who've made the same promise. (The "Silver Ring Thing" is a big group that promotes virginity pledges.)
In my opinion, it's up to every individual to decide whether they want to have sex, but telling kids "Wait until marriage" and not giving them any other options is irresponsible. I've read that studies show that, between kids who make a virginity pledge (and who went through abstinence-only education) and kids who don't, there's no significant difference in how old they are when they first have sex. In fact the ONLY difference is that, when the kids who made a virginity pledge have sex (against their pledge), they don't use protection!

Yeah, I've heard of one type of virginity pledge where, basically, the girl's father is supposed to buy her this necklace in the shape of a heart, but it's also a lock, and the father keeps the key. Then, when the girl gets married, the father gives the key to her husband. I think this is really weird and sort of creepy... yeah.

I think they are a good idea. It shows how committed you can be and everything. I wouldn't sign one just because if something did happen I would feel extremely bad but I dont know how that is creepy. I mean its like a father having a ring that he gives to the man who wants to marry his daughter. It pretty much says I give you permisson and I accept your marrige. Would it not make a guy feel good?

I totally agree with virginity pledges. I think they are a really good idea. In fact, I am actually looking to take one myself, through my church. My youth leader is really interested in "The Silver Ring Thing" and together, we're trying to sort something out. I think virginity pledges are signs of respect, not only for God but yourself. Also, it stops a lot of heartbreak, as you only have sex with one person in your life, which confirms your love for them.

I didn't mean to sound like I think all virginity pledges are creepy. If it is part of your personal belief that one shouldn't have sex before marriage, then by all means, you should make a pledge to do that and get support from others around you.
The part I find creepy was the thing about the father giving "permission" for his daughter to have sex. I find it creepy because it implies that the father owns the daughter's vagina until she gets married, and then her husband gets to have it. But it belongs to the woman, not any man. That's why I personally find that specific type of pledge to be very weird.

^^ I agree with biancasaur. If you are into them, go ahead and do it. But it's the girl's body and the girl's mind.
