Yeah meditation is pretty helpful, also did you consider birth control? I know that some people use it for particularly nasty periods.

When I have bad cramps and I need to relax, I'll make myself a cup of tea, sit down somewhere, and just totally focus on drinking the tea. Meditation can be hard for me because my mind wanders, but if I'm doing an activity and I try to focus completely on the activity, it's a little easier... just focus on sipping, swallowing, then breathing in and breathing out. The best part is that there are some teas out there that are really good for cramps -- try raspberry leaf or Dong Quai tea, which you can find in most health food stores (these are NOT good to drink if you're pregnant, fyi).
Another good way to relax your body is to lay down, and then focus on little parts of your body at a time. For instance, you flex your toes and tense them really hard, and then relax them as much as you can. Do the same with your lower legs, then your thighs, then your hands, then your arms... This is great to do if you can't fall asleep, too!

Try laying in a warm bathtub and listen to the water in your ears. the warm water also helps cramps
