Hi, when i was in year 10 i had double vision, i was assured by the optomertrist or whatever they were called that after doing a few eye excerices for a month or two it should go away. Well a couple of months passed, and more eye excercises begun in the end after about a year and a half maybe two years my double vision was still there and now along with another eye condition called keratoconus. So because my double vision was still there and we had done all the eye excercises and i had just begun year twelve they decided to do an operation which will "definately" fixed the problem. A couple of days ago nearly a year after the operation i found out the operation definately didnt work and that there was nothing else they could do for me with my double vision. So now i have the problem of trying to find a job a place that doesnt mind if i have double vision and has to wear an eye patch so that i dont break or walk into anything that i saw wrong. My question to you all is - why do people think its amusing and something that should be mocked all because a person wears an eye patch in class? Would you laugh if you walked into a room and saw someone wearing an eye patch and thought it necessary to make a joke and laugh about it aloud when the person wearing the eye patch can hear you?

I personally wouldn't make fun of someone wearing an eye patch but kids are cruel these days, they don't know how their words and mockery can effect a person until it happens to them. Two wrongs don't make a right and they aren't right for doing it but its going to happen whether we like it or not. You have no choice to wear an eye patch, I don't see anything "funny" about it. Do the kids understand that you have double vision? I remember a kid in my class who had to wear a helmet when we were in elementry school and we didn't understand why so it was kind of a joke to us but then the teacher explained why and no one ever said anything about it again. If I was you I would ignore them (yes, I know its very hard) but I would just give them the "you look stupider making fun of me look" and walk away.

Uh, I definitely would not laugh at someone if I walked in and saw they were wearing an eyepatch. But people, by nature, are insensitive jerkfaces. Seriously. There is no hope for humanity, lol. You will, unfortunately, have to live with that, just as you have, I'd assume, had to learn to live with your double vision. As for finding a job, have you ever considered a desk job? Staring at a computer all day can't be good for your eyes, but you wouldn't have to be up and about all the time, reducing your risk of running into and breaking something or hurting yourself. I don't really see why any place would have a problem with you wearing an eye patch, especially if it reduces your risk of damaging their property. As for the jokes, why don't you try to play them off? If you show people you don't care, and that you're willing to laugh at yourself a little, they wont have nearly as much fun making fun of you.

thanks for the comments, today i went to the Royal Society for the Blind - i was a bit weird about it at first but then are really friendly people and are willing to help me find a job - one that doesn't matter about my eyesight. Also by doing this i will be able to read easier as i might be getting vision tool things to help me work better (that might not have made sense sorry) last year a teacher really helped me get through the year, everytime we saw each other we would make pirate noises or say something in pirate, when i hurt my knee and was limping the pirate jokes became funnier and we decided that i defnately must be a pirate. If it wasn't for her then i might not see the funny side about it as much as what i do now, she didnt get angry when i accidently missed the table and broke a cup all because i misjudged where the real table and the fake table was, and im tankful i had an awesome teacher like that to help me get through the year

Well thats good, I don't think there will be many jobs that won't "accept" that unless its working with machinery or knives, you know something that could possibly kill you if you judgement was off.

In a situation like this if they were to pick the 'normal' person over the disbled person 'eye patch' it would be an example of workplace discrimination. These days, many lawsuits are filed because people are discriminated against by their emplyoer becaus of Race, Gender, Religion or disablity. You can find out more here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discrimination#Employment_Discrimination

I would choose the one whose qualifications meet the job description not based on a eye patch or not. I know alot of people are like that in the world and its probably really hard to deal wit it but i wouldnt let it get to me. I say that but Im not in that situation so i dont even know but I wouldnt do that to someone.
