The DivaCup can be somewhat messy, but it's not like you're going to spill blood all over yourself! You would dump the blood into the toilet, or possibly the sink. You might get blood on your hands, but nothing you can't just wash off.
They do kind of look big (my friend asked "How does that fit??") but if you think about it, it's way smaller than a penis -- or a baby! You get used to it.

It is a silicone cup that is inserted into the vagina, just like a tampon. Because of its shape, you have to fold it first, insert it, then twist it around so it "pops" out into a cup shape (this doesn't hurt). Instead of absorbing the blood like a tampon does, it holds the blood in the cup until you dump it out. Here's the website FAQ... www.divacup.com/content_qa.php

It's wider than a tampon, yes. When you insert it, though, you fold it up, so it's not much bigger than a tampon. It doesn't expand until it's already inside.
It shouldn't hurt to take it out... You "pinch" the cup when you're taking it out and sort of re-fold it, so you're not just pulling the cup straight down and out.

I'm not sure what you mean by safer. It's true that menstrual cups are not linked to Toxic Shock Syndrome, which tampons are. And often the cotton [in tampons] is bleached, so you're putting something that has bleach residue on it into your vagina, which I find pretty yucky.
In terms of being messy... If you have really heavy periods, it might get on your hands once in a while, yes. But you can always just wash your hands. Getting some blood on your hands is not the end of the world. These days we teach young girls that their period is something dirty and they have to use "hygienic products" to make sure they are "clean and fresh" down there, which I think makes a lot of people feel that period blood is the GROSSEST thing ever. But if you think about it, this may be crude, but nobody tells guys that their semen is the grossest thing ever!

How often do you have to empty out the diva cup? (This thread has been slyly hijacked lol )

LOL...
I change it less than I would change a tampon or pad. I can pretty much put it in at 8 am, go to work, go to school, return home at 4 or 5 pm and then take it out, and it won't be full. The only time I've had it leak is when I've worn it 10+ hours on a moderately-heavy day. When I am having a very light day near the end of period, I can wear the cup practically all day. Since there's no risk of toxic shock syndrome, the only risk of leaving it in is having it possibly fill up, and you soon learn how long you personally can leave it in on what days.

What scares me is thinking about the amount of trash that's created every day by women throwing out used tampons and pads! It's terrible for the environment.
